Cities & Sounds - Deciding How Things Should Be Heard
Designing things is fun. I’ve been talking with TOMES, the person who made the Treize soundtrack, about the possibility of her helping me with the soundtrack for Xau. Nothing is certain, but I feel it’s noteworthy. If she does join the project, she will be the one making music while I will be the one making sound effects.
I will also be getting them online for free, I don’t have access to a wide variety of sounds to mix together in cool ways. But I have made a few things.
I’ve mostly focused on the puzzle panels so far - I want their sound design to be just right. I imagine them being clicky, having a mechanical, loud but not annoying sound for when you solve a puzzle, and a quiet sound for when you get it wrong. Surprisingly, I achieved the last two things with a spoon and an alluminium glass - I have no idea what sorts of atrocities I did to them in Audacity, but I got the exact sounds I wanted.
For the clicky sounds I just went on OpenGameArt to find light switch sounds. I added some reverb for the reset sound, and for the undo sound I first reverted a light switch sound, then added reverb.
It was fun, and I think they really give life to the puzzles.
